Launch party Sept. 29th.

I just drooled over myself because my close friend Matt Nation (Owner, Founder) is such a tasteful BOSS.

Seriously, Matt is as close as a brother to me, and with my tour, and him striking out on his own to open up this shop, we’ve had vary parallel journeys over the last year. That’s why I’m so incredibly happy and heartened to witness this big, impossible, outrageous dream he had come tangibly to fruition. God is good.

A fun group I performed for in Gary, one of the depressed towns I’ve ever seen with some of the coolest, most interesting people. I did some Romeo & Juliet and Twelfth Night for these folks.

The `Speare Bearer: Dancing in Libertyville, 08/07

I spent a weekend in Libertyville, IL with the Rajchel’s. They are the parents of Tommy Rajchel, one of my best friends, who passed away tragically last year. Here I’m attending an Oldies Dance their Grieving Group was having in town. It was a joyful event. Here I am cutting a rug with some of the other ladies in the group.

The `Speare Bearer’s Ride: Oldie’s Ball, Libertyville, IL, 08/10

The Rajchel’s took me to an oldies ball in their town. Lots of older party people having a good time, dancing to great oldies music. Many of the people there are people in grieiving like the Rajchels, so they try to get together as much as they can to have fun. It was a fun time.

The `Speare Bearer: James and Brook, Seattle, WA, 07/05

Two friends in Seattle I stayed with. They were so kind to me, such wonderful hosts, such fun to talk to, fellow bike travelers, and they throw one hell of a 4th of July bash. I got to celebrate the 4th with them, at their beautiful pad near the water where we had a terrific view of the fireworks. The party was great fun, lots of great food, and all of James and Brook’s friends, who were awesome!

James and I knew each other vaguely from Savannah College of Art and Design, he worked there while I was in school there, and we have tons of mutual friends. he was someone I was referred to for tips about my trip early on and it was a great blessing for me for us to be able to reconnect. I sure hope we all cross paths again sometime soon. They are super fun, and very generous.

The `Speare Bearer: Going to try to crunch in all 3 days of Blythe, California into one post. And there’s some small footage of me performing there forthcoming. Blythe was the 1st small town we hit as we crossed the border from Arizona to California. We found a fella on Warmshowers.org (which is quickly becoming a pretty essential resource) names Wayne who was willing to take us in. He had a nice sized piece of property which was the home of his cool little bait shop/convenience store/picnic area/boarding house. It was a really cool place. In the back there was a little pier connected to the canals around the house, and on the side was the picnic party area where people hung and had drinks. There was a nice little Potluck hosted there by Wayne, and his right hand lady, Lizzy, both pictured. Many of the folks who came out were raised in that little town and they’ve all known each other for years. Brent and I were originally only going to stay one day. That turned into three, mainly because Wayne was pretty keen on me performing at his party. It was a great stay. They were all kind, wonderful, down to earth people.

Also, that pier you see me sitting on. Brent took that picture. I was actually pretty terrifed at that moment. we’re directly over a deep canal, on this rickety little bridge you could easily fall off of, and I can’t swim. The next day Brent pleaded with me to jump off the side with him and some other young kids he’d met who were swimming the canal. I refused, seeing no reason to put myself directly in harm’s way. Brent continued to plead with me, and then also began to appeal to another young boy, Angelo, who was 14 who was also afraid to jump. i was just fine not jumping… but I saw how afraid Angelo was, and how he was being pressured in such an aggressive way by his friends to face his fears.. I really related to him, knowing how much of a scaredy cat I was at that age, and still can be. Well, I decided it just wasn’t right for me to be biking across the USA, doing an art project about fear, and sit idly, avoiding one of my own, and setting bad example for Angelo. So I agreed to jump, as that was one of Angelo’s conditions for jumping. And jump I did. It was terrifying, and as Brent guided my non-swimmer ass to shore, I realized Angelo hadn’t. So I let him have it, and agreed to jump again, and made him give his word he would jump this time, which his aggressive friends were game to enforce. I jumped again. And this time so did Angelo. Ended up jumping three times that day. I was terrifiyied each time, but I did indeed face a fear. Each time wasn’t pretty, there was flailing, and panicking, and freaking out done on my part, but I did it. God is good…

I wonder if this means I can swim now.
